Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma is preparing for the growing Hispanic population and the influx of Spanish-speaking individuals. This population has the potential to become Girl Scout leaders for their daughters (who both may or may not be bilingual.)
Not only are we dealing with the language barrier of the growing Hispanic population we are working to instill the Girl Scout program in a population that has little or no history or tradition of Girl Scouting or volunteerism, further compounding the barriers. We also see in our own statistics for Girl Scout members that during the past 5 years we have increased Hispanic girl numbers by 102% and our adult volunteer numbers by 138%.
One very important goal at Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma is to reach out to our Hispanic Community. We reach out to this community in several ways. It is our responsibility to increase awareness of the Girl Scout program to the Hispanic population by coordinating and analyzing different outreach efforts. These efforts may include but are not limited to attending Hispanic parent meetings in the schools, participating in community events and partnering with different community agencies. We also offer our materials in both Spanish and English and we make sure to have Spanish speaking employees on hand. As a Council we are always looking for new ways to reach out to our Hispanic Community with the hope that this population of people will no longer be “underserved”.
In Tulsa County of 12,200 children, 8.2% are Hispanic. In 2004 Tulsa County and other surrounding county public schools had approximately 5,698 Hispanic girls. Hispanics are now the largest minority and soon 1 out of every 4 children will be Hispanic.
As of September 30, 2003 there were 585 Hispanic girls and 57 adults registered with the Tulsa area United Way service areas for a total of 642 members. We are currently serving 2,311 girls and 308 adults for a total of 2,619 members as of December 22, 2004.
