Resident Camp Staff Application
Nestled in the Osage Hills near Sand Springs, Camps Tallchief and Swannie provide the perfect setting for girls to have the traditional summer camp experience. Resident Camping is Council-sponsored, and the Council provides the total staff, equipment, facilities, and site. Resident Camping is an individual girl activity where a girl spends two to thirteen days living at our beautiful camps on Zink Ranch. You will sleep in a cabin, lodge, tent, bunkhouse, or yurt – depending upon your age and program selection. Kapers (daily chores) such as setting the dining hall tables and cleaning the latrines are part of each day’s activities to help you develop a sense of responsibility, community, and appreciation for keeping the camp neat and tidy. With the guidance of the unit staff, you will help plan portions of each day’s activities throughout the session. Camp activities are tailored to your age and camping experience. Each session offers specific activities and some are strictly limited to age and skill level. Check the session descriptions for those that fit your interests, age, and abilities.
Living Arrangements To meet GSUSA requirements and to provide maximum supervision, counselors sleep in close but separate quarters from the campers. Sleeping arrangements will vary depending on which session and program you attend.
ACCOMMODATIONS AT CAMP TALLCHIEF:
The bottom level of the Tallchief Lodge has sleeping quarters for 34 campers and 6 counselors. There are 2 Outdoor Living Centers, which each consist of 4 cabins and a latrine/shower house. Each cabin sleeps 10 campers and shares a porch with the counselors quarters which sleeps 2. The bunkhouse (Chestnut) sleeps 20 campers and 4 counselors.
ACCOMMODATIONS AT CAMP SWANNIE:
The Sheriff’s Office accommodates 10 campers and 2 counselors. The Hotel has sleeping quarters for 18 campers and 3 counselors. The Newspaper Office accommodates 8 campers and 2 counselors. There are a total of 6 Yurts. Four of the Yurts sleep 8 girls each, while each of the remaining two Yurts house 2-4 counselors. The Log Cabin has sleeping quarters for 16 campers and 4 counselors. The Treehouse can accommodate 2 separate units. One side has sleeping quarters for 16 campers and 4 counselors. The other can house 12 campers and 4 counselors.
International Camp Staff: We have the benefit of a multicultural atmosphere at camp. We hire camp staff from other countries through international camp staffing agencies. These counselors are eager to share their culture and learn about our culture in return.
HE & ME – 1 night (Session 2) Get away and spend some quality time with your favorite guy (21 and older). Team up with your cabin mates for a Pillowcase Scavenger Hunt. Try fishing, canoeing, and maybe go on a night hike. Sing songs around the campfire. Arrive at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday (eat breakfast before you come) and depart on Sunday around noon. “Me” participants and camp counselors will sleep at Camp Tallchief. “He” participants will sleep at Camp Swannie (adjacent to Camp Tallchief). SMALL & TALL – 1 night (Session 6) Stay up late and count the stars, tell silly stories, and make yummy S’mores while having a favorite grown-up female (18 and older) as your best buddy. Make memories to share by starting a scrapbook of your time together at camp. A sampling of favorite camp activities is ready for you to enjoy. “Small” participants will sleep at Camp Tallchief with their counselors. “Tall” participants will sleep at Camp Swannie (adjacent to Camp Tallchief). Arrive at 9:00 a.m. on Friday (eat breakfast before you come) and depart on Saturday around noon. Adults must also complete a health history (included in the confirmation packet). These programs offer a basic beginners experience for first time campers and are designed for girls who are not yet ready for a full week away from home.
BROWNIE TRY-IT – 2 nights (Session 3, 5) Come to camp and try it all! Go swimming in the pool, take a horseback ride in the arena, canoe on the lake, and more! GIDDY UP – 2 nights (Session 3) If you like horses, this is the program for you. Learn about horseback safety and the parts of a western saddle. Learn how to brush and groom your horse and then take a ride in the arena. Give your horse a treat and a kiss goodnight! Entering grades 2, 3, 4. Cost of Program: $170.00 GSEOK Member Fee: $135.00
GLAM AND GLITTER – 2 nights (Sessions 3, 5) Feel like a princess, look like a princess, dress like a princess. Bring your dress up clothes, shoes, jewelry, gloves, and hats as you prepare for the fashion show of the summer. Spend time doing your nails and fixing your hair. MAKE & TAKE – 2 nights (Session 3,5) Make a craft and take it home. Try your hand at painting. Start a scrapbook for your camp memories. Take a hike with your friends and make some nature crafts. SUGAR N SPICE – 2 nights (Session 3, 5) What are little girls made of? Sugar and spice, and everything nice. You and your cabin mates will have a ‘Pretty Party’, make cupcakes, and have a tea party. WHALES TALES – 2 nights (Sessions 3, 5) Check out life under the sea! Get wet all over when you’re swimming, boating, and learning about water safety. ME & MY BUDDY – 2 nights (Session 3, 5) Come to camp with your best buddy! You and your buddy will make crafts, go swimming, canoeing and more! PEDAL PUSHERS – 2 nights (Session 3, 5) Explore camp from the seat of a mountain bike! (Helmets, knee/elbow pads, and bikes are provided for campers.) Bike the trails and see the sights. BACKPACKING (Part 1 of 2) – 2 nights (Session 3) This is the planning and preparation part of a 2-segment program. Learn the proper way to load your backpack, plan your meals, and become familiar with the Leave No Trace principles and outdoor ethics. Practice some survival skills. Spend this time getting ready for your 3-night backpacking trip around Tallchief Lake when you return to camp for Session 7. Entering grades 6, 7, 8. Cost of Program: $144.00 GSEOK Member Fee: $85.00
BROWNIE DELIGHT – 5 nights (Sessions 1, 7, 8) The recipe for this program is F-U-N!! Your days will be filled with swimming, arts and crafts, canoeing, and more! American Red Cross certified instructors will also teach swimming lessons. This program is made up of lots and lots of Brownie-sized activities. Daily adventures are Brownie-sized too! EXPRESS YOURSELF – 5 nights (Sessions 1, 8,) Let your imagination soar in the great outdoors while you dabble in the world of creative arts. Campers will spend part of each day exploring a new art form and making crafts. Make a piece of jewelry or leatherwork to take home. Bring an item to tie-dye. Entering grades 4, 5. JUNIOR DISCOVERY – 5 nights (Sessions 1, 7, 10) This week will be yours to plan! Choose your favorite activities at camp and work together with your cabin mates to make it happen. Swimming, boating, and archery are just a few of the things you will get to try in this program. American Red Cross certified instructors will also teach swimming lessons. BUBBLE UP – 5 nights (Sessions 1, 7, 10) Create your own tropical paradise at camp. Make a volcano. Hang out in a hammock. Eat your breakfast in the pool or have lunch on the lake. Take a trip to the Oklahoma Aquarium in Jenks. You will also have time for other camp activities too. Comfort in water required. Entering grades 4, 5, 6. DANCE DIVAS – 5 nights (Sessions 1, 7) Hang out with your girlfriends and try a new dance step. Learn about dances from other cultures and countries. Create a dance routine to perform at the end of the week. Take a chocolate dip and cook out. Dance parties and porch sleep-outs are just a couple of the things happening in this program. DIAGON ALLEY – 5 nights (Sessions 1, 10) Work with Professor Snape to create magical potions and disappearing ink. Eat chocolate frogs, slay a dragon, and watch the students at Hogwart’s play Quidditch. Watch the Harry Potter movie series. Enter a world of mystical explorations and magical creations. TALLCHIEF SAMPLER – 5 nights (Session 7) This session offers you the chance to try a little bit of everything Camp Tallchief has to offer ~ a ride on horseback, canoeing or kayaking, arts and crafts, and lots more! You will have the opportunity to participate in something that you already like to do, or try something new. Entering grades 4, 5, 6, 7. Cost of Program: $380.00 GSEOK Member Fee: $235.00
*NIGHT OWLS SCHEDULE All programs scheduled for Session 4 will operate on the Night Owls schedule. During Session 4, breakfast is at 11:00 a.m., lunch is at 3:00 p.m., dinner is at 9:00 p.m., and lights out is at 1:00 a.m. All program activities that are offered during our “regular schedule” sessions will also be available during the Night Owls schedule. *Prerequisite: attended 5 consecutive nights at a resident camp, church camp, band camp, etc.
OKIE KARAOKE – 5 nights (Sessions 4*, 8) Rock the camp as you perform your talent. Explore rock, rap, country, and any other kind of music that rocks your socks. Sing and dance with your cabin mates while you prepare to host an all-camp dance party. You’re the DJ! Make up your song list in the right order to keep the party hoppin! PAMPERED CAMPER – 5 nights (Sessions 4*, 10) Fashionably fun and fabulously fancy. You’ll learn the latest tips on hairstyles, what colors look best on you, and investigate fashion tips and trends. Learn which fork and spoon to use at a fancy meal. Bring one dress to camp with you because you will go out in style one night. Experience a true formal dinner with your cabin mates at a restaurant in Tulsa. PHOTO FUNTASTIC – 5 nights (Sessions 4*, 7) Bring a 35mm camera and 2 rolls of 35mm 400ASA color film – or – 2 disposable 35mm cameras. You will have fun taking pictures of your friends, new and old. Learn how to set up “trick shots” and take great pictures. Your film will be developed and you will start a scrapbook to treasure for years. *Ses. 4 Night Owls Schedule: Entering grades 6 and up. PEDALER’S PARADISE – 5 nights (Session 1) Calling all bicycle fans! Pedal your way around camp, exploring the trails. Learn about bike safety, cycling for fitness and basic bike maintenance. Your group can decide where they want to go for an overnight bike ride! Helmets and bikes are provided, but you may bring your own helmet and 3-speed or higher ‘mountain bike’ type bicycle in good working order with sturdy tires. BACKPACKING (Part 2 of 2) – 5 nights (Session 7) Experience Camp Tallchief from a more primitive perspective. Take a 3-night backpacking trek around Tallchief Lake. Sleep out in tents all week long. Cook your meals over an open campfire. Learn to use a compass. Learn outdoor survival and wildlife recognition skills. Get closer to nature and experience the great outdoors in true Girl Scout style. ARTISTIC CRAFTS – 5 nights (Sessions 4*, 10) Let Camp Tallchief provide an outlet for your creative energy! Mold a piece of clay, fire it in our kiln, and create a finished piece of art to take home. Learn about woodworking and build a birdhouse. You will work on requirements to complete the Artistic Crafts Interest Project Award during this program. CACHE & STASH – 5 nights (Session 8) Geocaching (pronounced jee-o-cash-ing) is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure, played by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. Your group will take daily off-camp adventures to locate hidden containers. Half the fun of ‘caching’ is trading the items you find inside. Once you have found a geocache, place your item to trade, take an item you like, sign the logbook, and return the geocache to its original location. Grab your flashlight and search for a cache in the dark. You could encounter thorns and rocks while searching for some caches, but others are found in very accessible places. You just don’t know until you set out on your adventure! Good physical stamina required. MIDNIGHT MADNESS – 5 nights (Session 4 – Night Owls Schedule) Bring a flashlight! Explore the world of camping after dark during Night Owls Session 4. Night games and night hikes, stargazing, skits, moonlight swimming, and crafts. Rise and shine for breakfast at 11:00 a.m. Lunch is at 3:00 p.m., dinner is at 9:00 p.m., and Lights Out is at 1:00 a.m. This allows you to participate in lots of camp activities after dark! RIGHT ON TARGET – 5 nights (Session 4 – Night Owls Schedule) Do you want to hit that bull’s-eye? Pull back that string and let those arrows fly! Get experience using a compound bow. This specialty program will not only teach you the basics of archery, but also allow you to compete for nationally recognized skill level awards. Learn how to repair arrows and refine your shot. Whether you are a beginner or a master archer, your skills will benefit from this exciting program. CREATIONS OF CLAY – 12 nights (Session 9) This program is all about pottery. You will take a tour of Frankoma Pottery in Sapulpa, OK. You will learn about Native American and Greek pottery, as well as the different types of clay. You will have the chance to create unique items to take home with you. You will earn some requirements of the Artistic Crafts and Visual Arts Interest Project Awards. Entering grades 7 and up. Cost of Program: $785.00 GSEOK Member Fee: $490.00
CSI: CAMP SCENE INVESTIGATORS – 12 nights (Session 9) You’re a part of the CSI Team! This session will open your eyes to the field of forensics. Meet and interact with a professional in the field of forensics and explore some mock crime scenes at camp. (Some scenes will be taken from the C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigators board game.) Analyze blood spatter. Dust for fingerprints. You will do what forensic scientists do – analyze physical evidence to uncover the truth using chemistry, biology, and physics. Watch episodes of C.S.I. and Bones. Work towards earning the online Uncovering the Evidence Interest Project Award. Entering grades 7 and up. Cost of Program: $785.00 GSEOK Member Fee: $490.00
CURTAINS UP – 12 nights (Session 9) Are you a drama queen? Have you ever wondered how the “magic” of theater really works? Then come to this program and work on some requirements for The Play’s the Thing Interest Project Award. You will go to Discoveryland to watch the musical Oklahoma! You will create a play from beginning to end: write the script, set the stage, and design the costumes. Then perform your production in front of your parents and fellow campers. SHUTTERBUGS – 12 nights (Session 9) From black and white film developing to digital imaging, this program takes you through the full progression of photography. During the first week, take some pictures, learn how to develop black and white 35mm film, and print your favorite shots in the camp darkroom. Go to the Tulsa Zoo to practice your photography skills using your own 35mm camera. During the second week you will explore the sights of camp through the LCD screen of a digital camera. Utilize a laptop computer and special digital photo software to enhance, manipulate, and create unique effects with the images you have captured on the memory card. Take home your favorite shots and create a scrapbook of your photos to remain at camp for others to admire. You will work on earning the Photography Interest Project Award. AMUSEMENT PARK PHYSICS – 12 nights (Session 9) You’ve bought your ticket and boarded the roller coaster. Now you’re barreling down the track at 60 miles per hour, taking hairpin turns and completing death-defying loops. The only thing separating you from total disaster is your safety harness…but are you really in danger? In this program you will learn how amusement park rides use the laws of physics to simulate danger and have the chance to design your own roller coaster. You will visit Frontier City in Oklahoma City and also travel to Worlds of Fun in Kansas City, MO. Entering grades 8 and up. Cost of Program: $955.00 GSEOK Member Fee: $500.00
Camp Tallchief has facilities for swimming, fishing, pedal boats, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, skiing and tubing. All campers who attend Resident Camp will participate in a swim assessment to determine their level of proficiency in the water. All campers will be allowed to participate in the water activities while wearing a life jacket, regardless of their swimming ability. However, a camp counselor will buddy up with those campers who are not strong swimmers during their scheduled lakefront activities. Comfort in water is required for participation in the Waterfront Specialty Programs. Camp Tallchief follows Safety-Wise standards for all waterfront activities.
*WF*: All campers attending waterfront sessions must pass the swim assessment. To pass the swim assessment, a camper must be able to tread water unassisted for 1 minute and swim the width of the pool (42 ft.) without touching bottom.
DECK HANDS – 5 nights (Session 1) Get an introduction to the wide world of sailing during this session. Learn how to sail a sunfish on your own. Haul in the sheet – and you’re off on an exciting adventure. Skills include knot tying, boating terms, and rigging procedures. Come build your sailing skills and enjoy other camp activities as well. CANOE CRUISERS – 5 nights (Session 4 – Night Owls Schedule) Who can canoe? YOU!! This will be a great session for all campers, from beginners to experienced canoers. Come sharpen your capsizing skills and strokes during the twilight of Night Owls Session 4. You will complete the American Canoe Association’s Intro to Canoeing course. You will also earn parts of the Paddle, Pole, and Roll Interest Project Award. FIRST MATES – 5 nights (Session 7) This is the second level of our sailing program. Hoist your sails and pilot your way across Tallchief Lake. This session is designed for experienced sailors. Fine tune your nautical skills and have a regatta. Learn the art of tacking and how to use a jib sail on your Capri. This is a skill building session that can be taken more than once. Expand your sailing knowledge and still take part in other camp activities. You will also earn parts of the Paddle, Pole, and Roll Interest Project Award. GUARDSTART: LIFEGUARDING TOMORROW – 5 nights (Sessions 1, 4*) **To participate in this program you must be able to: 1) swim the front crawl for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side, 2) tread water for 1 minute using arms and legs, and 3) submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet underwater.** This program provides a foundation of aquatic leadership and knowledge, attitudes and skills, for future successful completion of the Red Cross Lifeguard course. Learn how to assist others in trouble in the water. Learn how to provide basic-level First Aid, CPR, and AED. You will watch videos and work through a handbook to record your progress and skills. WATER BUGS – 5 nights (Sessions 1, 7) This program keeps you sliding on top of the water. Do you like to water ski or ride on a tube? During this program, you will practice basic boat safety and have the opportunity to learn and improve your water skiing skills. WATERLOGGED – 12 nights (Session 9) If you love being in, on, or around the water, then this is the program for you! This group will spend most of its time enjoying lake activities such as skiing, kayaking, tubing, sailing, canoeing, swimming and cheering from the dock. Take a 3-night trip to explore the water from Camp Pauline Williams on Ft. Gibson Lake. Take a 1-day canoe trip down the Illinois River. Spend a day canoeing on Skiatook Lake. Some requirements of the Water Sports Interest Project Award will be completed. In addition to all this water fun, you will still participate in other traditional camp activities. The Camp Tallchief horseback riding program is designed to give girls entering the 5th – 12th grades a working knowledge of horse and stable care, arena and trail riding, and the use and care of tack and other equipment. Our progressive program teaches riding “from the ground up – NOT from the saddle down.” Each camper is required to learn and carry out certain ‘barn chores’. This type of involvement is important for you to learn and accept the responsibilities of horse care and feeding, as well as proper grooming and saddling techniques. Any girl attending these programs must bring jeans, and boots or shoe with a 1” heel to participate. Each progressive level of the program reviews previously acquired skills and introduces new ones. Camp Tallchief wranglers follow the Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA), American Camp Association (ACA), and Girl Scouts of the USA Safety-Wise standards. Our program also utilizes portions of the CHA curriculum.
HORSIN’ AROUND – 5 nights (Sessions 1, 8) This is the first level in our progressive program. You will love horsing around in this program. You will get to be at the arena in the morning or evening and also have time for arts and crafts or swimming. Learn the basics of horseback safety and proper riding etiquette. You may complete some badge requirements of the Junior Horse Fan badge. This is a skill-building session and may need to be repeated if all skill requirements are not successfully completed. At least one pair of jeans and boots (or shoes with a heel) is required. Trotting with balance and control while successfully steering in the arena will be the skill to focus on. A trail ride, washing and watering the horses could be just a few of the activities you’ll have, as well as time to cool down at the pool. BLAZING SADDLES – 12 nights (Session 9) This is the fourth level in our progressive riding program. This session is for girls who can successfully steer their horses at a trot and have great form and control. You will take several trail rides, saddle, groom, feed, lead, and water your own horse. Embark on an overnight trail ride. Travel off camp to see a horse show and a rodeo. Perform the skills you have mastered for your family and friends in our Dreamcatcher Arena. You will complete some requirements of the Horseback Riding Interest Project Award. This is a skill building session and may need to be repeated if all skill requirements are not completed. Jeans and boots (or shoes with a 1” heel) are required. Entering grades 8 and up. *Must have successfully completed Horses of Course. Program Cost: $1,010.00 GSEOK Member Fee: $500.00
This internship and leadership program is for girls who have completed Blazing Saddles. Come to camp and take care of the horses while expanding your skills and knowledge of being a Camp Tallchief Wrangler. You will assist with all aspects of horse and barn care. At least one CHA Certified Instructor will guide you in assisting with trail rides and arena lessons. Participation in the W.I.T. Program does not guarantee future employment at Camp Tallchief.
W.I.T. INTRO – 5 nights (Sessions 1, 7) The main objective within this level is to acquaint you with the daily schedule of the wranglers. W.I.T.s will observe and assist with things such as working on ground skills (ie: grooming, assisting saddling, feeding), enforcing safety (ie: clothing, shoes, arena/barn rules), barn responsibilities (ie: tack and saddle care, helmet care, feeding, watering, arena and pen mucking), as well as wrangler and camper interactions. The focus in this level is for you to begin learning how to verbally assist campers with skill building instruction. W.I.T.s will observe wranglers in the arena and on the trail while getting hands on practice with instructing the campers doing ground work. Entering 10th grade and up. W.I.T. 1 – 12 nights (Sessions A: 4* & 7 -or- Session B: 9) This level will cover the planning for and practicing actual instruction on the trail and in the arena. The training will focus on verbally communicating your instructions to the camper on the horses and less physical assistance. W.I.T.s will assist wranglers with some of the instruction in the arena and on the trail, mounting and dismounting, assist with first aid drills, and enforce safety around horses and barn. W.I.T.s will assist with leading horses, administering horse first aid, leading ground instructions, and assisting with arena and trail instruction under the direct supervision of the wranglers. Participants will be housed in the Wrangler’s Quarters at the Dreamcatcher Arena, outside of the Camp Tallchief gates.W.I.T.s will work on some parts of the Horse Program Aide Specialization Module while attending this session. *Session 4: Night Owls Schedule. W.I.T. 2 required week - 5 nights (Session 1) plus 2 week internship During this program the W.I.T.s will be completing 100% of the wrangler chores and responsibilities and will be under the direct supervision of the wranglers. W.I.T.s will lead all ground work, weekly emergency drill, arena and trail instructions, safety instructions for the barn, and all other horse related issues. Each W.I.T. will have her skills evaluated to determine whether or not she would be considered for a staff position as a wrangler at Camp Tallchief. Entering 12th grade. The Scout Outdoor Adventure Ranch (S.O.A.R.) Challenge Course is a series of activities that promote teambuilding and problem solving skills within a group. The challenge course offers an experiential learning environment. A series of obstacles called “elements” challenge the group to work together as a team in developing a solution. While the obstacles are perceived to be physically challenging, any person willing to try can succeed through the cooperative efforts of the group. As your group conquers each element on the course, they will learn about themselves and their relationships with others. In the Girl Scout program, we strive to help girls grow and develop values, interpersonal relationships, social conscience and conviction about their own self worth. Learning these qualities has never been so fun or exciting than through the S.O.A.R. program. The S.O.A.R. Challenge Course is a series of individual challenges and group problem solving initiatives to develop trust, teamwork skills and individual confidence.
S.O.A.R. Challenge Course Philosophy: Each girl is encouraged to attempt each activity. With guidance and instruction, each activity promotes self-confidence, group trust and equipment dependability. To effectively benefit from the program, we encourage the girls to enter with a sense of adventure and willingness to experience new things. The “challenge by choice” concept is an initiative where each girl decides on her level of participation and intensity according to her own individual needs. No one is ever required, forced or coerced to do any activity.
Challenge Course Components: The Challenge Course is comprised of three areas: Games and Initiatives, Low Elements and High Elements. Each area is designed to prepare the group for the next area. All groups must move through the first two areas in order to safely and successfully participate on the high elements. Participants of all ages in reasonable shape can use the facilities safely. One does not have to be an athlete to experience the Challenge Course. The genuine challenges are in the mind.
S.O.A.R. 1 – 5 nights (Session 1) Want some adventure? Challenge yourself in this session by learning basic rappelling skills. The S.O.A.R. Challenge Course will be utilized for most of your activities. Use teamwork to solve unique puzzles and uncover your personal best. Swimming and other camp activities will be included too. This is a skill building session and may be repeated. Entering grades 7 and up. *Must have previously attended 5 consecutive nights at a resident camp, church camp, band camp, etc. Cost of Program: $673.00 GSEOK Member Fee: $360.00
S.O.A.R. 2 – 5 nights (Session 4 – Night Owls Schedule) Another phase of the high adventure progression takes place during Session 4, Night Owls Week. This program adds to the challenge of the high elements by following the Night Owls schedule. You will experience the high elements….after dark! What does the zip line look like when all you can see are the lights on the landing platform? Come to this program and find out! Ropes N Rocks – 6 nights (Session 7) The adventure continues . . . This is the advanced phase of the high adventure progression where you will experience caving, bouldering, and rock climbing. You will go on a 6-night tent camping adventure in Arkansas. Explore a cave with a waterfall and climb a natural chimney. Good physical stamina is required. Campers will check-in and check-out from the Girl Scout Service Center in Tulsa. Entering grades 8 and up. *Must have completed S.O.A.R. 1 or S.O.A.R. 2. Cost of Program: $1,000.00 GSEOK Member Fee: $500.00
So you think you want to be a camp counselor? Find out what counselor life is really like! The C.I.T. Program enables girls to better understand the Girl Scout practices and principles related to camping and outdoor education. The C.I.T. Leadership Project was developed to afford Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts the opportunity to experience the challenges and rewards of working with younger girls in an outdoor setting. Becoming a C.I.T. also enables Ambassador Girl Scouts to gain insights into the responsibilities of managing a camp through direct involvement in daily administrative activities.
C.I.T. is a 6-week program designed to give you a chance to improve your leadership skills. You will learn about child development, delivery of Tallchief programs and camp operations, Girl Scout camping philosophy, and outdoor skills. Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts are asked to attend a total of 6 weeks of training over 3 years with the intent of working at least 1 full summer at camp upon graduation from high school.
C.I.T. Outdoor Skills A – 1 night (Sessions 2, 6) This specialized program will focus on outdoor cooking skills, knots, and lashing. First-timers will gain new skills while experienced campers can hone their talents and perfect their form. Learn about the different types of fires to use for cooking different types of meals. Learn the knots most commonly used for outdoor recreation and/or outdoor survival. Poisonous plant and venomous animal/insect identification may also be covered. Other camp activities will be incorporated as time allows. Entering grades 10, 11, 12. *Must complete Outdoor Skills A and/or B before applying for the C.I.T. 2 program. C.I.T. Outdoor Skills B – 2 nights (Session 3) This specialized program will take you around the trails at Camp Tallchief. Hike the trails. Mark the trails. Learn how to use a compass (a skill called orienteering). Learn how to use a hand held GPS device. Learn how to use and read a map. Animal track identification may also be covered during this program. Other camp activities will be incorporated as time allows. Entering grades 10, 11, 12. *Must complete Outdoor Skills A and/or B before applying for the C.I.T. 2 program. Cost of Program: $99.00 GSEOK Member Fee: $50.00
C.I.T. INTRO – 5 nights (Sessions 1, 4*) The beginning phase of this course presents an overview of the Counselor-In-Training (C.I.T.) program. You will learn about camper/counselor relations through discussion, shadowing, and role-playing. These skills will be evaluated through a skills assessment given by the C.I.T. Director. In addition to this, you will also participate in general camp activities. *Ses. 4-Night Owls Schedule. Entering 10th grade and up. Cost of Program: $327.00 GSEOK Member Fee: $175.00
C.I.T. 1 – 12 nights (Sessions A: 4*, 5, & 7* – or – Session B: 9) During the second phase of the Counselor-In-Training (C.I.T.) program, you will learn the skills needed to work with Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts at camp. You’ll learn songs, games, outdoor skills, hands-on help with camp routines, as well as teaching techniques and leadership skills. Entering 11th grade and up. *Must have completed C.I.T. Intro. Cost of Program: $800.00 GSEOK Member Fee: $185.00
C.I.T. 1s registered for the 3-part program (Ses. 4-Night Owls, Ses. 5, and Ses. 7) will go home between each camp session.
C.I.T. 2 – 5 nights plus 2 week internship (Required week – Session 1) During the final phase of the C.I.T. program, you will attend the required week of C.I.T. training (Session 1: June 13-18). Next, you will choose two additional weeks of camp to perform your C.I.T. internship. This is your chance to put into practice what you learned from your previous training. You will have daily assignments in program areas. Upon completion of the program, you will be awarded a certificate and plaque. Your employment as a paid camp counselor is contingent upon your skills, readiness, Council hiring practices, Safety-Wise considerations, state laws and your age. Completion of the C.I.T. program does not guarantee future employment at Camp Tallchief. Entering 12th grade. *Must have completed C.I.T. 1. *Must have completed C.I.T. Outdoor Skills A and/or B. Cost of Program: $327.00 GSEOK Member Fee: $45.00

Registration and Waiting List Procedures
Resident Camp grows in popularity each year. It is important for all Council members to have a fair and equal chance to participate in the program of their choice. When sessions have more applicants than space allows, names will be drawn and a waiting list will be formed. Acceptance and participation in all Council programs is open to all girls regardless of race, disability, ethnicity, creed, national origin, or socio-economic status.
- Registrations must be received (not postmarked) by the deadline and can be either mailed or brought to the appropriate Council Service Centers to be included in the drawing.
- Registrations must include the non-refundable registration fee.
- If your camper’s name is drawn, a confirmation will be sent to you.
- Only one registration per girl will be accepted for the initial placement in order to allow equal opportunity for all girls to attend at least one session of camp.
- A girl may turn in additional registration forms after April 1 if she desires to attend camp more than once.
- Since registrations will not be processed without the registration fee and parent’s signature, faxed registrations will ONLY be accepted if credit card information (including credit card number and expiration date) is included on the registration form.
- To be placed on a waiting list for a program at camp, you must send in a registration form with the non-refundable registration fee. If you change your mind, you must call to be canceled off of the waiting list. If you do not cancel off of the waiting list, your registration fee will not be refunded.
- If the Council cancels a program for any reason, you will be offered the opportunity to attend a different program, or your registration fee will be refunded.
- Mail your registrations with non-refundable registration fee to the address listed on the registration form.
Transportation To and From Camp
By Private Vehicle: A parent/guardian may transport the camper to and from Camp, in his or her own vehicle, for check-in and check-out. No special arrangements are necessary for choosing this option. Mark the appropriate box on your registration form so that you will receive a map/directions to camp after your camper has been placed in a session.
Carpooling Resources: If transportation is a problem, please visit www.CarPool2Camp.org for an economical and environmentally friendly alternative! This Web site provides a cool and fun way for girls to make a friend before they even get to camp. Log on, find others in your area who are attending camp at the same time as you and coordinate carpooling. Don’t have internet access? Call 800-707-9914 and we will help facilitate carpooling.
Health Information Form/Camp Physical
Appropriate forms will be sent to you in a Parent Packet once the camper has been placed in a camp session. If your camper is spending three or more nights at Resident Camp, a Camp Physical form is required. A physical obtained for school sport functions is acceptable. The physical must have been administered within 12 months of the first day of the camp session.
**SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT FOR YOUR PHYSICAL NOW!!** Health forms for overnight camping will be sent with confirmation information after registrations have been processed and will also be available online at www.GirlScoutsEastOk.org.
FREE PHYSICALS will be available at the Camp Wah-Shah-She Open House on Saturday, May 15. (See pages 4-5 for more information on Tallchief and Wah-Shah-She Open Houses.) Free physicals will be available in Tulsa in April. Details will arrive in your confirmation packet after your camper has been placed.
Refunds The balance of program fees may be refunded ONLY if notice of cancellation is received at least two weeks prior to the beginning of camp. Early notice will make it possible for another girl to attend camp. Refunds will not be made for campers arriving late, leaving early, or attending partial sessions.
Refunds in the amount of $9.99 or less will be given in the form of a store credit. All other refunds will be issued as a check, regardless of form of original payment. Please allow 2-4 weeks processing time. The only time the “non-refundable” registration fee will be refunded is when we are not able to place your camper into a program due to a wait list, or due to a program being canceled by the Council. Cookie Credit used will be returned to the account, and will not be refunded in the form of a cash refund. Changing Sessions: Once a camper has been placed and a confirmation distributed, a $10 fee will be imposed to change sessions, redirect placement, and reissue a new confirmation.
Financial Assistance Financial assistance is available for any GSEOK registered Girl Scout who doesn’t have enough Cookie Credit and who would not otherwise be able to attend camp. Any Cookie Credit available from the current year sale will be applied to the balance before financial assistance is considered. If you feel you have a need for assistance with the balance of your camp fees, check the box on the registration form. An application will be mailed to you upon camper placement into a program. The application needs to be completed and returned as soon as possible for consideration. As soon as the request has been evaluated, you will be mailed a letter stating the amount granted and the balance due, if any. All information regarding financial assistance is NOT shared with anyone, including your daughter’s troop leader, and will remain confidential.
Discounts Multiple Sessions: You will receive a 10% discount for each additional Resident Camp session your camper attends at Camp Tallchief, excluding Core Camping. The discount cannot be taken off the non-refundable registration fee. The registration fee must be paid in full.
Multiple Family Members: You will receive a discount for each additional Girl Scout in your family signing up for any Resident Camp program. For example, the first Girl Scout pays the full fee for her program; additional Girl Scouts from the same family receive a discount of 10% off the camp fee for their programs. See the Resident Camp registration form for details. The discount cannot be taken off the non-refundable registration fee. The registration fee must be paid in full.
Camp Buddies Campers who wish to stay together at Resident Camp must register for the same session and both must meet the program requirements. Information must be provided on both registration forms to request a specific camp buddy. Every effort will be made to place two buddies together.
